Street dogs in Bucharest, Romania

Although recently re-elected president of Romania Traian Basescu exterminated tens of thousands of dogs when he was mayor of Bucharest between 2000 and 2004, Bucharest still has roaming packs of wild dogs. The problem orginated when dictator Nicolae Ceausescu leveled a fifth of historic Bucharest in the 1980s to remodel the center of the city after Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and to make way for the building of The Palace of Parliament, the second largest building in the world. Romanians were froced from their villas and sent to live in Communist Blocs and their pets were left on the street. © Aga Luczakowska, freelance documenatary photographer based in Bucharest, Romania
